Key points
The Colts "don't appear to be in any rush" to trade Jonathan Taylor, ESPN's Jordan Raanan reports.
According to Raanan's sources, the Giants have made an offer for Taylor.
The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 10, so Indianapolis still has time.
The Jonathan Taylor market has a new beat. The Giants have put an offer on the table, and the Colts are not racing to cash it in.
The Colts "don't appear to be in any rush" to trade Jonathan Taylor, we shared Thursday, citing ESPN's Jordan Raanan. The trade deadline is not until Tuesday.
Raanan added that, according to his sources, the Giants have made an offer. He posted a video update on the Giants' running back situation and Taylor's market.
Where the Jonathan Taylor Talks Stand Now
This is a clear step past the "interest" reports from last week. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said Sunday the Colts were in active discussions and open to dealing Taylor.
The Athletic's Jonathan Jones had already put the Giants and Vikings among the favorites. We covered that favorites list over the weekend.
An offer from New York matches what Raanan has said about the Giants' deadline posture. He expected them to be active at the deadline earlier this week.
Why the Colts Can Afford to Wait
Tuesday's deadline leaves Indianapolis with five days to shop the market. That lines up with Raanan's "no rush" read.
Indianapolis has already moved Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner this week, ESPN reported. Ownership still preferred to keep Taylor in the rebuild when those talks opened.
The asking price has been the sticking point. ESPN reported the Colts want a return closer to the four-pick Christian McCaffrey deal from 2022 than a single second-round pick.
By the Numbers: Jonathan Taylor Trade Window
Item | Detail |
NFL trade deadline | Tuesday, Nov. 10 |
Days left (as of Nov. 5) | 5 |
Taylor's 2026 rushing | 587 yards, 8 TDs |
Contract through | 2028 |
Taylor is 27 and signed through 2028, so a buyer is not shopping a rental. He was tied for the league lead in rushing touchdowns when the Colts opened talks, per ESPN.
Why the Giants' Timing Makes Sense
New York's backfield is already thin. Cam Skattebo worked on the side with trainers again Wednesday with a hamstring injury, as we covered. Tyrone Tracy Jr. is on injured reserve.
Raanan's Thursday video framed the Giants' running back situation alongside the Taylor market. An offer now fits a roster that needs help at the position before the deadline closes.
The Giants visit the Eagles on Sunday. Any Taylor deal would have to clear Tuesday's cutoff regardless of how that game goes.
Our Take: Keep the Pressure On
I said it when Schefter floated a McCaffrey package: if true, you make the deal. An offer on the table is the next step, not the finish line.
Stop fretting over draft picks. The 2022 Giants looked "ahead of schedule," and the next three years were trash. Add the proven back.
John Harbaugh has my complete and total endorsement to trade picks for talent. When the first buyer list dropped, I said the Giants have to be one of them.
My read on the Colts has not changed. He's getting traded. They are shopping for the highest bid.
New York just showed it is in that auction for real. With Skattebo day-to-day and Tracy on IR, sitting this one out would be a missed chance.
