Derrick Brown Named Breer's Pie-in-the-Sky Giants Target

Key points
SI's Albert Breer floated Panthers star Derrick Brown as a pie-in-the-sky swing after Jeffery Simmons moved.
Carolina is not actively looking to move Brown, and The Athletic's Joe Person says teams have inquired with no interest from the Panthers.
The NFL trade deadline is Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. ET, four days after Breer's notebook.
Derrick Brown is now the pie-in-the-sky name in the Giants defensive tackle search. SI's Albert Breer floated the Panthers star as a premium swing after Jeffery Simmons landed in Chicago.
"The pie-in-the-sky swing for someone to take, in the Simmons aftermath, might be for Panthers star Derrick Brown," Breer wrote, as we posted Friday. "That would be very expensive, though, with Carolina not actively looking to move him."
The Giants interest in adding a defensive lineman has been widely reported. The open question is whether New York would pay a premium for someone like Brown.
What Albert Breer Wrote About Derrick Brown
Breer's deadline notebook said the defensive tackle market remains hot after DeForest Buckner and Jeffery Simmons already moved.
He listed the Giants, Jaguars and Vikings as still turning over rocks for help. Brown sat at the top of the aspirational lane.
Later in the same column, Breer added that the Panthers have looked at the idea of trading Brown or veteran guard Robert Hunt. That is not the same as shopping him.
Why Brown Fits the Giants' Defensive Tackle Hunt
Breer already said Simmons was not the only defensive tackle the Giants called about in his Oct. 30 column.
James Palmer of NFL on Prime said Friday the Giants have been very aggressive for a defensive lineman. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler put Buccaneers DT Vita Vea on the Giants' radar after the Simmons miss.
Ian Rapoport expects New York to be aggressive for an interior lineman and a running back. Joe Person of The Athletic reported teams have inquired about Brown, with Carolina showing no interest, per PanthersWire and Heavy.
Brown signed a four-year, $96 million extension in 2024. That price tag helps explain why Breer called any deal very expensive.

What Comes Next Before Nov. 10
Four days remain before the deadline, per ESPN. Breer did not say a Brown deal is close. He named the swing and the cost.
The Giants already missed on Simmons after John Harbaugh called the Titans' owner. Brown is a different tier of ask: Carolina is not shopping him.
Breer did not report that the Giants have made a formal offer on Brown. He framed Brown as the pie-in-the-sky answer for teams still hunting a star tackle after Simmons.
Our Take: Pay the Premium if Carolina Blinks
When Ian Rapoport said the Giants would be aggressive for an interior defensive lineman, I approved. Breer putting Brown in the pie-in-the-sky lane is simply the next chapter of that same hunt.
Coach Harbaugh is all in. When he went after Jeffery Simmons, I said he wants his Dexter Lawrence. That still frames how I see every star tackle rumor this week.
Harbaugh has my complete and total endorsement to add good football players for draft picks. Stop worrying so much about draft picks. Add good players.
Brown would be expensive, and Carolina is not shopping him. If a seller ever blinks on a true difference-maker up front before Nov. 10, I want the Giants to pay that premium now.
