Key points

  • ESPN's Jordan Raanan expects the Giants to be "active" at the NFL trade deadline next Tuesday.

  • New York has already reached out to teams about "big-name" players, Raanan reported.

  • The Giants sit $6.225 million under the salary cap, per NFLPA records cited by Raanan.

The Giants trade deadline picture just got clearer. ESPN's Jordan Raanan expects New York to buy before Tuesday. He says the front office has already started calling about big-name players.

"The NFL trade deadline is next Tuesday," Raanan posted on X Monday morning. "The Giants are expected to be active and have already reached out to teams about big-name players."

"They currently are $6.225M under the salary cap, per NFLPA records," he added, as we shared on X.

Why the Giants Are Positioned to Buy

Raanan's report lands eight days before the Nov. 10 deadline. That window matches what we mapped in our week of Giants trade rumors heading into November.

Cap room is part of the story. Raanan put New York at $6.225 million under the 2026 salary cap, citing NFLPA records.

Separate Over the Cap tallies published Sunday night listed the Giants around $6.72 million, per Pro Football Rumors. Either figure can absorb a midseason salary once a signing bonus stays with the selling team.

The Jonathan Taylor rumors were loud all weekend, as we covered Sunday after Ian Rapoport said the Colts were in active discussions. The Athletic's Jonathan Jones had already put the Giants among the favorites to land Taylor.

Raanan did not name the big-name targets in Monday's post. Weekend reporting still points to a star running back as the loudest link.

Indianapolis is open to moving Taylor if the return matches a Christian McCaffrey-style package, ESPN reported.

What Comes Next

John Harbaugh has the Giants in first place entering Week 8. JJ McCarthy's early starts have backed the idea that New York can win the NFC East, as we noted in sharing Raanan's report. That standing is why a buyer mindset fits.

Any deal still has to clear the asking price. The Colts already have at least one offer that includes a second-round pick plus more. They want something closer to the four-pick McCaffrey trade from 2022, per ESPN.

Our Take: If They Are Active, Make It Count

My first reaction to Raanan's report was simple: Woah.

After Dallas collapsed Sunday, I said I hoped the Cowboys loss motivates the Giants even more to trade for Jonathan Taylor. An active buyer with first place in hand should not sit still for the next eight days.

Schefter's McCaffrey-package ask does not scare me off. If true, you make the deal. Four picks sounds like a lot until you remember what a real back does for a quarterback who is just finding his footing.

The Giants were fine using the fifth overall pick on Jeremiyah Love in draft rumors. Trading for a proven star in Taylor for a second and later picks seems obvious given how they value star backs.

John Harbaugh has my complete and total endorsement to add good football players for draft picks. If they are truly active, make the call that matches the ambition.
