Key points

  • Malachi Fields said he is getting extra work with JJ McCarthy after practice to learn the quarterback's preferences.

  • Fields told Giants Huddle he is figuring out how McCarthy throws and what he sees downfield.

  • The comments come ahead of Sunday's Giants game at Philadelphia.

Malachi Fields is still learning JJ McCarthy. The Giants receiver said the pair's after-practice work is helping him sync with his new quarterback, via Giants Huddle.

"It's been exciting, just trying to learn him and figure out what he likes, how he throws the ball, what he's seeing out there," Fields said. "So it's always good to get that extra work," we posted Saturday, crediting Giants Huddle.

The quote fits a storyline that started when McCarthy pulled Nabers and Fields aside for route work after practice last month.

What Malachi Fields Said About JJ McCarthy

Fields framed the work as practical, not flashy. He wants to know McCarthy's throw profile and what the quarterback sees before the ball leaves his hand.

That matches what McCarthy himself said after the bye. He told reporters he felt "caught up completely" on the Giants offense and spent the break getting on the same page with his targets.

Giants Huddle's Malachi Fields episode also previewed Sunday's matchup with the Eagles. Fields' McCarthy comments sit inside that same interview window.

How Extra Work Fits the Giants' Receiver Room

McCarthy arrived from Minnesota on Sept. 28 and made his first Giants start Oct. 25 at Houston. He completed 20 of 28 passes for 252 yards with no interceptions in a 27-21 overtime win, per the ESPN box score.

Fields posted career highs that day with four catches for 83 yards, per Giants.com. We covered his grade in Malachi Fields' top offensive PFF mark from that game. For the full season grades hub, see our Giants PFF grades page.

Brandon London of Blue Rush had already described McCarthy staying late with Nabers and Fields on outs and corners. Fields' Huddle comments are the receiver's own confirmation that those sessions keep happening.

Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio even called the McCarthy trade a "steal" ahead of Sunday's game in Philadelphia.

What Comes Next for Fields and McCarthy

The 4-2-1 Giants visit the Eagles on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. Fields' comments do not preview a new role. They describe the daily work behind a young quarterback-receiver pairing that is still building.

McCarthy's bye-week comments and Fields' Huddle quote point the same direction. Both say the extra reps after practice are how they close the gap from a midseason arrival.

Schefter-level trade noise does not change that. The receiver room still has to play Philadelphia with the chemistry it has built since Houston.

Our Take: This Is the Leadership and Development I Wanted

When Brandon London said McCarthy pulled Nabers and Fields aside after practice, I answered with one word: Leader.

After Houston, I said the Giants have themselves a quarterback. Fields describing after-practice work is the same story from the receiver's side.

I have also said young players are actually developing under this staff in a way we rarely saw in recent years. That includes Fields.

I did not realize how good McCarthy's arm was until I watched him throw laser missiles. Extra work after practice is how a receiver learns that ball.

I do not have a separate Fields-only take beyond that. His Giants Huddle comments just confirm the work is real heading into Philadelphia on Sunday, and that is what I want to see from this room.
