Key points

  • Malachi Fields had the Giants' highest offensive PFF grade, 89.3, in the 27-21 overtime win over the Texans.

  • The rookie caught four of his five targets for 83 yards, both career highs.

  • His 47-yard catch-and-run from JJ McCarthy was his second reception of 40 or more yards this season.

Malachi Fields had the best game of his young career Sunday, and PFF's grades agree. The Giants rookie posted an 89.3 grade in the 27-21 overtime win at Houston, the highest of anyone on the offense.

The grade was shared by Big Blue Film Room on X, which noted Fields caught four passes for 83 yards. On a day Malik Nabers went over 100 yards again, the rookie still graded out on top.

It is a jump from where his season stood. Fields entered the week third on the team with 25 targets, as laid out in Giants Pass Catchers: Target Share and Roles Through Week 6.

How Malachi Fields Won in Houston

Fields was efficient more than busy. He caught four of the five passes thrown his way, per the ESPN box score, and averaged 20.8 yards per catch.

The big one was a 47-yard catch-and-run from JJ McCarthy, his second catch of 40 or more yards this season. The 83 yards and four catches were both career highs, according to Giants.com.

He beat his previous career high by 31 yards, NBC Sports noted.

Malachi Fields and the PFF Climb

The Week 7 number stands out against his season grade. PFF had Fields at 58.7 through Week 6, 74th of 80 qualifying receivers, in our Giants PFF grades 2026 hub.

One strong game won't flip that ranking on its own. It does show what the third-round pick out of Notre Dame can do when the quarterback pushes the ball downfield.

Fields also played 94% of the offensive snaps in Week 6, his highest share of the season, so the opportunity was already there.

What Comes Next for the Giants Rookie

The Giants have their bye in Week 8, then visit Philadelphia on Nov. 8. The question is whether McCarthy keeps finding Fields outside the numbers. Nabers and tight end Isaiah Likely could just as easily pull the targets back their way.

Our Take: Fields Fits What McCarthy Brings

I don't have a separate hot take on Fields from Sunday, so I'll stick to what the box score shows.

Back in Week 4 against Arizona, I called a Jameis Winston throw to him a really nice play with great patience. I gave the rookie a shoutout on that one, too.

During this game I posted that JJ is changing this offense for the better. Afterward I said McCarthy was throwing absolute laser missiles out there.

A receiver like Fields benefits most from that arm. His 47-yard catch-and-run is the kind of play I had in mind when I talked about that arm.

If those deep shots keep coming after the bye, Fields could become a lot more than the third option.
