Key points

  • From Oct. 24 to 31, Jonathan Taylor went from a possible Giants suitor to one of the favorites, with a reported "2nd round pick, plus" price.

  • Art Stapleton made a defensive tackle the priority on Oct. 29; Connor Hughes flagged Tony Pollard as a cheaper back on Oct. 30.

  • On Oct. 31, John Harbaugh's call to the Titans' owner about Jeffery Simmons became public, and the NFL trade deadline remains Nov. 10.

Giants trade rumors stacked up over the past week. Running back and defensive tackle keep coming up. The deadline is Nov. 10, and the reports are stacking up by the day.

Here is every major Giants trade rumor and report from Oct. 24 through Oct. 31, with the date it landed and who reported it.

Oct. 24: Giants Named Possible Jonathan Taylor Suitors

The week started with The Athletic. On Oct. 24, Jonathan Jones wrote that sources believed the Giants and Vikings "could be potential suitors" for Colts running back Jonathan Taylor.

Indianapolis was still reluctant then. Ownership loved Taylor, and the Colts wanted more clarity on their season before listening, Jones reported.

Oct. 27: Interest Confirmed, and a Price Tag

On Oct. 27, ESPN's Jordan Raanan went further. He said his belief, from talking to people, is that the Giants "do have interest" in Taylor.

He put the likely cost at a "2nd round pick, plus," as we shared on X from Breaking Big Blue.

That same day, the Colts' sell list got real. Adam Schefter reported Indianapolis was expected to listen on Taylor, Quenton Nelson, DeForest Buckner and Keenan Allen, per coverage of the report.

Buckner did not wait. The 49ers acquired him on Oct. 27 for a 2027 fourth-round pick, per Colts.com and league reports. One big defensive tackle was off the board.

Oct. 28: Looking for a Running Back and a Defensive Tackle

On Oct. 28, Jordan Schultz put the Giants' shopping list in one line. In his NFL trade notes, he wrote that the "#Giants are looking for RB/DT," per sources.

We shared Schultz's note on X the same afternoon.

GM Joe Schoen had already said the Giants would "canvas the league and see what's available," NFL.com reported. The deadline itself is Nov. 10, per Giants.com.

Oct. 29: Defensive Tackle Becomes the Priority

Art Stapleton drew a sharper line on Oct. 29. He still thinks the Giants could add a running back. He expects the priority to be an interior defensive lineman.

"But I expect priority will be add IDL if they can. That's the move. Stop the run," Stapleton wrote on X.

The timing hurt. That same day, the Bears traded for Titans All-Pro Jeffery Simmons. Chicago sent 2027 and 2028 first-round picks plus a fourth, Jonathan Jones reported.

Oct. 30: Tony Pollard Enters the Chat

On Oct. 30, SNY's Connor Hughes named a cheaper back. On WFAN, he said to "keep an eye on" Titans running back Tony Pollard as a Giants trade target.

He does not "think it's going to cost a grotesque amount," as we shared on X. We wrote up the Pollard case the same day.

Pollard has 112 carries for 478 yards and four touchdowns through seven games, per ESPN. Tennessee is 1-6 and already selling pieces.

League-wide, ESPN's Dan Graziano has called Pollard "more likely" to move than Taylor, and Jeremy Fowler called him an "attractive fallback," Bleacher Report noted.

Oct. 31: Favorites, and Harbaugh's Call to Ownership

Saturday brought the biggest updates of the week.

Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport reported the Colts are now open to trading Taylor, with talks active and ongoing, according to ESPN. The Broncos, Packers, Vikings, Giants and Seahawks have shown interest.

Then Jones raised the Giants' standing. "The Vikings and Giants are among the favorites to land Jonathan Taylor," he posted from his Athletic column.

We covered the favorites report and shared it on X. Indianapolis already has at least one offer with a second-round pick plus more, ESPN reported.

The same Jones column detailed how badly John Harbaugh wanted Simmons. Harbaugh called Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk directly after GM Joe Schoen was told no, Jones reported.

Tennessee still said no, then dealt Simmons to Chicago. We covered the ownership call and shared it on X.

What Giants Trade Rumors Are Still on the Board

Taylor is expected to play Sunday against Jacksonville, per ESPN. The Giants have a bye, then visit Philadelphia on Nov. 8, two days before the deadline.

Buckner and Simmons are gone. Pollard remains a cheaper path. Analysts have also floated Colts defensive tackle Grover Stewart as a run-stopper option, Giants Wire noted.

Schoen has warned that missing fourth- and fifth-round picks "may rule some players out," per NFL.com. Ten days remain.

Our Take: Be Buyers, and Aim High

I said on Oct. 21 that this is the most winnable NFC East since 2020, and the Giants should very seriously look at a trade for a player like Taylor.

When the first suitor list came out, I said the Giants have to be one of them. You know how badly Harbaugh wants a stud back.

I would rather chase Taylor than a receiver like Brian Thomas Jr. On Oct. 27 I said they are making a trade that will have a real impact.

The Simmons miss fits the same theme. After Jones' report, I said Harbaugh wants his Dexter Lawrence. I never wanted Lawrence traded in the first place, because he makes everyone around him better.

If New York is going to spend picks, spend them on difference-makers like Taylor or a true interior force. Holding every pick and hoping is how 2022 went wrong.
