Key points

  • Cam Skattebo is listed as doubtful for Sunday's Giants game at Philadelphia after a limited Friday practice.

  • Devin Singletary is expected to be the RB1 with Tyrone Tracy Jr. on injured reserve.

  • Coach John Harbaugh said Friday he wants to keep the door open on Skattebo's availability.

Cam Skattebo is doubtful for the Giants' trip to Philadelphia. The running back was limited Friday after sitting out Wednesday and Thursday, per the official Giants injury report.

"Cam Skattebo did not practice on Friday and is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game vs the Eagles," we posted Friday night. The official report shows limited participation Friday after two DNPs earlier in the week.

The Giants also noted that Devin Singletary is expected to be the RB1 with Tyrone Tracy Jr. on injured reserve. That lines up with RotoWire's report citing ESPN's Jordan Raanan.

Cam Skattebo's Hamstring Has Limited Him All Week

Skattebo hurt his hamstring late in the 27-21 overtime win at Houston on Oct. 25. The injury came at the end of his 42-yard run that set up Singletary's game-winning touchdown.

As we covered Wednesday, he worked on the side with trainers earlier this week. Coach John Harbaugh had called him day-to-day before Friday's designation.

Harbaugh still would not close the door Friday. "Yeah, let's keep it open," he said, per ESPN's Jordan Raanan. "Let's see what happens."

Devin Singletary Steps Into the RB1 Spot

The depth chart is thin. The Giants placed Tracy on injured reserve with a hamstring injury during the bye, per Giants.com. He has to miss at least four games.

That leaves Singletary as the most experienced healthy option. Gregory Desrosiers was signed off the Chargers' practice squad, and Eric Gray is back on the practice squad.

CBS Sports notes Singletary would likely serve as the lead runner if Skattebo sits, with Desrosiers and practice-squad backs in line behind him.

What Skattebo Has Done This Season

Skattebo leads the Giants with 418 rushing yards on 98 carries, per ESPN. No other New York back has 100 rushing yards this season.

His last game was his best. He ran 17 times for 124 yards and a touchdown at Houston, per the ESPN box score, after reclaiming the lead-back role.

What Comes Next for the Giants Backfield

The 4-2-1 Giants visit the 2-6 Eagles on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. They host Washington four days later on Thursday night.

Two games in five days leave little margin if Skattebo cannot go. The Giants open a roster spot after waiving Jake Haener, and Harbaugh declined to announce related moves Friday, per Sports Illustrated.

Our Take: The Giants Need Their Best Back Healthy

I have been clear about Skattebo. Cam is the best back they have, and he needs to be featured.

Before Houston, I said the Giants should get the run game going and feature Cam. He answered with 124 yards, and I loved the revenge game.

I still think Tracy is a good running back, but he is on IR. That leaves Singletary and very little behind him.

I do not have inside knowledge of how the hamstring feels Friday night. A doubtful tag after limited work is a real concern, not a panic.

If Skattebo cannot go Sunday, New York needs him ready for Thursday. Two NFC East games in five days is a hard stretch without your best back.
