Key points

  • Cam Skattebo is expected to be OK after hurting his hamstring late in the Giants' overtime win at Houston, per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

  • He felt it on his 42-yard run in overtime, the play before Devin Singletary's game-winning touchdown.

  • The Giants are on their Week 8 bye and return Nov. 8 at Philadelphia.

Cam Skattebo should be OK after injuring his hamstring late in the Giants' 27-21 overtime win over the Texans, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported Monday. The timing helps, because New York is off this week and its lead back gets extra time to heal.

The update was shared by Big Blue Film Room on X: "The Giants enter a bye week, giving Skattebo more time to heal." The second-year back ran for 124 yards and a touchdown on Sunday.

He got hurt on the play that set up the win. It was a 42-yard overtime run before Singletary's 30-yard score, as we detailed in Giants vs Texans Final Score: Singletary's OT Run Wins It, 27-21.

How Cam Skattebo Hurt His Hamstring in Overtime

Skattebo slid at the end of that run instead of being tackled. He told ESPN's Dan Graziano that he felt something in his hamstring and knew the Giants were already in range, according to USA Today.

"Good thing we have a bye week," Skattebo said, per Graziano. He gave no other detail.

A RotoWire update on CBS Sports adds that Skattebo doesn't sound like he will require an MRI.

Why the Giants' Bye Week Matters for Skattebo

This is a report, not a team diagnosis. The Giants placed Tyrone Tracy Jr. on injured reserve Tuesday, but no injury move was announced for Skattebo.

The calendar is on his side. New York (4-2-1) sits atop the NFC East and does not play again until Nov. 8 at Philadelphia. That is two full weeks between games.

Tyrone Tracy's Hamstring Puts Him on Injured Reserve

Skattebo was not the only back hurt Sunday. Tyrone Tracy Jr. scored the Giants' first touchdown, then left in the second quarter with a hamstring injury of his own. He finished with six carries for 15 yards.

Tracy is now on injured reserve and will miss at least the next four games, per Giants Wire. GM Joe Schoen said the injury "won't be something that's going to be long-term," according to Giants.com.

To fill the spot, New York signed running back Gregory Desrosiers from the Chargers' practice squad. Schoen said he still has "a lot of confidence in Skatt (Cam Skattebo) and Motor (Devin Singletary)," per Giants.com.

What Comes Next for Cam Skattebo and the Giants

After the bye, the Giants play back-to-back division games: at the Eagles in Week 9, then home against Washington on Thursday Night Football.

The report gave no timeline beyond the bye. The next real update should come when New York returns to practice ahead of the Eagles game.

Our Take: The Giants Need Cam Skattebo Healthy After the Bye

Back in September, I wrote that he was putting the offense on his back. Sunday was more of the same, which is why this hamstring report matters.

With Tracy on injured reserve, the Giants' run game leans on Skattebo even more. I'm not going to guess at a timeline the report didn't give.

If he's ready for Philadelphia, my view hasn't changed. Feature Cam.
