Key points

  • Francis Mauigoa posted a 100% pass block win rate in the Giants' 27-21 overtime win at Houston, according to PFF.

  • That led every rookie offensive lineman in Week 7, ahead of Spencer Fano at 92.1%.

  • His season PFF pass-blocking grade is 45.1, so Sunday stands out against a rough start.

Francis Mauigoa gave the Giants his cleanest game yet in Houston. According to PFF, the rookie right guard won every one of his pass-blocking reps in Sunday's 27-21 overtime win.

Big Blue Film Room shared the number on X on Monday. Mauigoa "had a 100% pass block win rate in Week 7," and the Giants offensive line "continues to perform well in pass protection."

PFF's own list put him first among Week 7 rookie linemen. Spencer Fano (92.1%), Max Iheanachor (88.2%), Monroe Freeling (86.4%) and Kadyn Proctor (84.6%) followed, per PFF on X.

What Francis Mauigoa's Win Rate Measures

PFF added pass block win rate to its premium stats in September. PFF explains that it tracks how often a blocker does not lose his rep.

A 100% rate means PFF did not charge Mauigoa with a single lost rep in Houston. He also earned a 66.4 overall PFF grade, ahead of tackles Jermaine Eluemunor (64.2) and Andrew Thomas (61.2), per Giants Wire.

The Giants Asked a Lot of Their Rookie Guard

Mauigoa started 42 games at right tackle at Miami, and the Giants moved him inside to guard after taking him 10th overall in April.

That pick came from Cincinnati in the Dexter Lawrence trade. John Harbaugh called Mauigoa and Arvell Reese "two top-five players in this draft, in our opinion," per the AP.

The early returns were uneven. His 44.8 Week 6 grade against the Saints was among the lowest on the offense, per Giants Wire. Every Giant's season mark lives on our Giants PFF grades page.

The Giants' Protection Still Has Work to Do

Mauigoa's day does not mean the whole line was clean. JJ McCarthy faced a 46.7% pressure rate, sixth-highest in Week 7, according to ESPN's Jordan Raanan.

The tackles have held up well. Jermaine Eluemunor leads all NFL tackles in pass block win rate, as we covered in our Eluemunor win rate story.

Our Take: Francis Mauigoa Is the Kind of Addition This Line Needed

Back in September, I listed Mauigoa among the major additions of the Harbaugh era, and I said all of them had made a real impact. The season grades have been tougher on him than that, which is why a clean day in Houston matters.

Before the season, I put him at right guard in what I called the best Giants offensive line on paper since 2011. Hands down, not close.

I've also said the Giants have two of the best pass-protecting tackles in the game. A rookie guard who wins his reps next to them is how that group lives up to the billing.

One game doesn't erase a slow start, and he is still 21 and learning a new position. Sunday was the version of Mauigoa the Giants drafted 10th overall.
