Key points

  • The Giants beat the Texans 27-21 in overtime on Devin Singletary's 30-yard touchdown run.

  • JJ McCarthy went 20 of 28 for 252 yards in his first start, and Cam Skattebo ran for a career-high 124 yards.

  • New York is 4-2-1 and holds the NFC East lead through its Week 8 bye.

The Giants vs Texans game needed overtime Sunday. Devin Singletary ended it with a 30-yard touchdown run, giving New York a 27-21 win in Houston and a 4-2-1 record entering the bye.

The final was shared by Big Blue Film Room on X: "The Giants defeat the Texans in OT, 27-21. They improve to 4-2-1." Houston fell to 2-5.

JJ McCarthy got the start over Jameis Winston, as we covered in Giants to Start JJ McCarthy vs Texans After Fourth-Quarter Rally. He completed his first five passes for 96 yards, and the Giants had their first opening-drive touchdown since Week 1.

How the Giants Won It in Overtime

Houston received the overtime kickoff and went three-and-out. Kayvon Thibodeaux dropped a potential interception on second down, the AP reported.

Cam Skattebo broke a 42-yard run on the next possession. Singletary scored on the following play, the longest walk-off touchdown run by a Giant in overtime, according to Giants.com.

Regulation nearly got away. Skattebo's 16-yard touchdown made it 21-14 with 8:55 left. C.J. Stroud then hit Xavier Hutchinson for a 3-yard score on third-and-goal with 52 seconds remaining.

McCarthy and Skattebo Drove the Giants Offense

McCarthy finished with no turnovers and a 99.1 passer rating. Malik Nabers caught seven passes for 111 yards, his fourth straight 100-yard game. Odell Beckham Jr. is the only other Giant to do that, per Giants.com.

Skattebo played six snaps and didn't touch the ball a week earlier. The lead-up to his return is in Cam Skattebo Expected to Get Bigger Giants Role vs Texans.

Four Giants ran for touchdowns: Tyrone Tracy Jr., Winston, Skattebo and Singletary. It was the first time since 1950 that four Giants had a rushing score in one game.

The Giants Defense Held Up Without Three Starters

New York played without safety Jevón Holland, cornerback Greg Newsome II and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds. Holland's absence is covered in Jevon Holland Ruled Out vs Texans as Giants Lose Their Top Safety.

Micah McFadden made 10 tackles, two for loss. Houston ran for 84 yards after the Giants allowed 377 on the ground over the previous two games.

The caveat is the kicking. Dominic Zvada missed both of his field goal attempts, including a 56-yarder.

What Comes Next for the Giants After the Bye

The Giants are off in Week 8, then visit Philadelphia on Nov. 8 before hosting Washington on Thursday Night Football. Tracy left with a hamstring injury in the second quarter.

Our Take: Harbaugh Has Changed the Giants' Direction

Right after the game, I posted that it's impossible not to love this team. Then I went further: it's actually insane how much John Harbaugh has changed the direction of the New York Football Giants.

Sunday was the proof: a third starting quarterback, three defensive starters out, two missed kicks and still a road win.

I said JJ McCarthy averaged 9 yards per attempt, and the box score backs it up: 252 yards on 28 throws. He was throwing absolute laser missiles out there.

I honestly don't think I've ever seen a quarterback throw as hard. The Giants gave up a 2027 fifth-round pick to get him, and I think he was worth a 5th.

I also loved the Skattebo revenge game. His 42-yard run set up the winner.
