Key points
Tom Coughlin is among five head coaches who advanced for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2027.
The Coach Subcommittee will pick one Candidate from the five on Nov. 17 for the full Selection Committee.
Coughlin went 182-157 including playoffs and won two Super Bowls as Giants head coach.
Tom Coughlin is back in the Hall of Fame conversation. The Hall advanced five former head coaches for 2027, and the two-time Super Bowl Giants coach is on that list, as we shared on X.
"Legendary Giants HC Tom Coughlin has been nominated for the Hall of Fame class of 2027," Big Blue Film Room posted. The five coaches who moved forward are Bill Belichick, Coughlin, Mike Holmgren, Dan Reeves and Mike Shanahan, per the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
All five reached this stage last year, when Belichick was chosen as the coach Candidate for the Class of 2026. The next cut comes quickly.
What the Hall of Fame Coach Process Means Now
The Coach Subcommittee trimmed an original pool of 14 nominees down to these five, the Hall announced.
That group meets virtually on Nov. 17 to select one Candidate for the full Selection Committee early in 2027, Giants.com reported.
Eventually, 15 Finalists will go to the annual meeting before Super Bowl LXI: 13 modern-era players, one coach and one contributor. The Class of 2027 will be announced at NFL Honors in February and enshrined in Canton in August.
The last coach elected was Don Coryell with the Class of 2023, per the Hall.

Why Coughlin's Giants Case Still Resonates
Coughlin spent 20 years as an NFL head coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars (1995-2002) and the New York Giants (2004-2015), the Hall noted.
Including playoffs, he posted a 182-157 record and led the Giants to two Super Bowl titles. He also won a title with the Giants as an assistant coach.
Two other coaches with Giants ties advanced as well: Belichick and Reeves, Giants.com pointed out. Belichick's six Super Bowl titles as a head coach remain the central comparison in any coach debate.
The current Giants staff under John Harbaugh is chasing its own standard. We covered how Harbaugh has talked about winning the NFC East and turning over every stone on trades.
What Comes Next on Nov. 17
Nothing is decided yet. Nov. 17 only produces one coach Candidate for the full committee, not a Hall of Fame induction.
The Hall's bylaws call for between three and seven new members in a class, with no set number reserved for coaches. Coughlin's next step is that single subcommittee vote.
If he is the coach presented early next year, the full Selection Committee will decide whether he joins the Class of 2027 in February.
Our Take: What Nov. 17 Means for Coughlin
I do not have a fresh written take on this nomination beyond sharing the news. The facts still make the case clear enough on their own.
Coughlin's Giants résumé is two Super Bowl titles, a 182-157 career mark including playoffs, and a third ring as a Giants assistant, per the Hall. That is Canton-level history in New York blue.
Belichick is the other giant in this five-man group. Last year he was the coach Candidate for the Class of 2026. The subcommittee is weighing that comparison again on Nov. 17.
Holmgren, Reeves and Shanahan are serious names too. None of them coached the Giants to two Super Bowl wins the way Coughlin did.
For Giants fans, Nov. 17 is the date that matters. One coach moves on, four do not, and Coughlin is still in the room where it counts.
