Trace Ford Giants Update: Elevated to Active Roster Again
Updated: 11 hours ago
The latest Trace Ford Giants news is another vote of confidence from the coaching staff. Ford will be elevated to the active roster again this week, according to ESPN's Jordan Raanan, giving the second-year player one more chance to make his mark on game day.
It is a small roster move, but for a young player trying to carve out a role, every call-up matters. Ford now has a chance to build on the opportunity he received a week ago.
Why the Trace Ford Giants Call-Up Matters
Ford saw some game action last week against the Washington Commanders, and that look was apparently enough for the Giants to want him back in uniform. Coaches often use elevations to reward players who prepare well during the week, and a repeat call-up suggests Ford handled his first opportunity the right way.
His rise did not start in October. The second-year player caught the eye of head coach John Harbaugh in training camp this summer, standing out in a setting where every rep is evaluated. Earning the head coach's attention in camp is often the first step toward a real role, and Ford has kept that momentum going into the regular season.
What a Practice Squad Elevation Means
Under NFL rules, teams can elevate a player from the practice squad to the active roster for a game, and the player reverts to the practice squad afterward without having to clear waivers. Each practice squad player can be elevated up to three times per season before the team must sign him to the 53-man roster to keep using him on game days.
That makes each appearance important. If Ford keeps making the most of his snaps, the Giants could eventually face a decision about a permanent roster spot. For now, he gets another chance to show Harbaugh and the staff that his strong summer was no fluke, and Trace Ford is a name worth watching for Giants fans this week.
Trace Ford's Background
Ford signed with the Giants as an undrafted free agent on May 9, 2025. He played at Oklahoma State from 2019 to 2022 before transferring to Oklahoma for 2023 and 2024. Across 58 college games and 16 starts, he recorded 99 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, five forced fumbles and two interceptions, according to his Giants bio.
The 6-foot-2, 252-pound outside linebacker flashed again this summer. In the preseason finale against the New York Jets, he earned a spot on PFF's Team of the Week after recording a sack, multiple tackles for loss and quarterback pressures, per Giants Wire.
Ford's Role So Far This Season
The Giants also elevated Ford on Oct. 3 and Oct. 10. Across his first two games, he played 19 defensive snaps and 47 special teams snaps, including 16 defensive snaps against Washington, according to Giants Wire's Dan Benton.
This is his third standard elevation of the season, which is the limit. If the Giants want to keep using him on game days, they will have to sign him to the 53-man roster. The edge group could use the depth with Brian Burns out for the season after tearing his ACL.
