Giants vs Saints Final Score: Comeback Falls Short in 34-27 Loss

The Giants vs Saints matchup ended in disappointment for New York on Sunday. The Giants put together a comeback push, but it came up short, and the New Orleans Saints held on for a 34-27 win.

The final score tells the story. New York fought back after falling behind, but the deficit proved too much to fully erase. The Giants got within one score by the final whistle, yet the Saints did enough to close it out and leave with the victory.

Giants vs Saints Final: A One-Score Finish

A seven-point margin is about as close as a loss can feel without coming down to the final kick. In the NFL, any deficit of eight points or fewer is considered a one-score game, because a single touchdown followed by a two-point conversion can erase it. At seven points, a touchdown and an extra point would have been enough to tie the game.

That is what makes a comeback that falls short so frustrating. Completing one in the NFL is difficult for a reason. When a team trails late, the offense usually has to lean more on the passing game to move the ball quickly and save time on the clock. That makes the play-calling more predictable, and it gives the opposing defense a better idea of what is coming. The trailing team also needs its own defense to get stops and hand the ball back with enough time to work with, so all three phases have to come through at once.

The Pregame Storylines Heading Into Sunday

Several notable storylines surrounded the Giants before kickoff. On offense, ESPN's Jordan Raanan reported that the expectation was for a change to the Giants RB rotation, with Najee Harris taking on a larger role and Cam Skattebo seeing fewer carries. The move was aimed at jump-starting a run game that had been rather stagnant, with head coach John Harbaugh looking to shake things up.

On defense, Giants beat writer Dan Duggan said he fully expected Dennard Wilson to continue to send the house against New Orleans. That expectation followed a game against the Washington Commanders in which the Giants blitzed on 62% of dropbacks, their highest blitz rate in a game since 2023, according to Raanan.

There was also a roster note to track. Raanan reported that second-year player Trace Ford would be elevated to the active roster again this week after he saw game action against the Commanders. Practice squad elevations let a team add a player for game day, and he reverts to the practice squad afterward without having to clear waivers.

What Comes Next for the Giants

How those game plans held up will come into focus as the film gets broken down. The backfield split, the blitz rate and the role of young players like Ford are all worth revisiting once the full picture of this game is available.

For now, the result goes down as a loss, and the Giants turn the page. NFL teams typically spend the day after a game reviewing the tape, correcting mistakes and identifying what worked, before shifting their attention to preparing for the next opponent. The comeback effort shows this group did not quit when it fell behind, but the goal is to avoid needing a rally in the first place.
