Giants Blitz Plan vs Saints: Dennard Wilson Expected to Send the House
Updated: 11 hours ago
The Giants blitz plan could be one of the biggest storylines of the day when New York takes on the New Orleans Saints. Giants beat writer Dan Duggan weighed in on the defensive game plan for today's matchup, and his expectation is clear: "I fully expect Dennard Wilson to continue to send the house."
That would mean more of the same from a defense that leaned heavily on pressure a week ago. According to Jordan Raanan, the Giants blitzed the Washington Commanders on 62% of their dropbacks last Sunday. That was their highest blitz rate in a game since 2023, a clear sign of just how aggressive the approach has become.
What Sending the House Means for the Giants Blitz
In football terms, sending the house means bringing extra rushers beyond the usual four, often linebackers or defensive backs, to overwhelm the protection and get to the quarterback before he can settle in. A blitz is designed to force quick decisions, create negative plays and take away the time a quarterback needs to work through his reads.
When roughly six of every ten dropbacks draw a blitz, as they did against Washington, the pressure stops being a change-up and starts to become the identity of the defense. That is the approach Duggan expects Wilson to bring again against New Orleans.
Why the Approach Carries Risk and Reward
Blitzing is one of the highest-variance decisions a defensive play-caller can make. When it works, the quarterback is hurried, throws come out early and drives stall. Pressure can also lead to sacks, fumbles and rushed passes that turn into turnovers, which can swing a game in a hurry.
The trade-off is coverage. Every extra rusher means one fewer defender in coverage, which can leave cornerbacks and safeties in one-on-one matchups with less help behind them. If the protection holds or the quarterback gets the ball out quickly to a hot route, a well-timed throw can turn into a big play. Offenses that see a heavy blitz rate on film will also prepare quick passes, screens and protection adjustments designed to punish it.
That is why the Saints matchup is such an interesting test. New Orleans will have had a week to study the tape from the Commanders game, so the question is whether the Giants keep coming with the same intensity or mix in different looks to keep the Saints guessing.
What to Watch vs the Saints
The first thing to watch is how often the Giants bring extra pressure, especially on third down and in obvious passing situations. If the blitz rate stays anywhere near what it was last Sunday, it will be a strong sign that this aggressive style is here to stay rather than a one-week plan built specifically for Washington.
The second is how the back end holds up. An aggressive front only works if the secondary can survive the matchups it is left with. If the Giants can get home quickly and the coverage holds, this defense has a chance to set the tone for the entire game.
Either way, Duggan's read points to a Giants defense that has no plans to sit back. Expect pressure, expect a busy day for the Saints' offensive line, and expect Dennard Wilson to keep dialing up the heat.
