Key points
The Giants agreed to a 3-year, $46 million extension with CB Greg Newsome, including $32 million guaranteed, Jordan Schultz reported.
Newsome has allowed a 61.4 passer rating across six games for New York after signing as a free agent on a one-year deal.
Schultz later noted the extension creates cap space as the Giants stay active buyers before the Nov. 10 trade deadline.
Greg Newsome just came off the free-agent board. The Giants agreed to a three-year, $46 million extension with $32 million guaranteed, we reported Tuesday, citing Jordan Schultz.
ESPN and the Associated Press confirmed the same Greg Newsome Giants framework: three years, $46 million, $32 million guaranteed.
How the Greg Newsome Giants Deal Came Together
Newsome arrived on a one-year free-agent contract and quickly earned a starting role. In his debut, he allowed one catch for eight yards on 52 snaps, we noted in September.
Six games in, he has allowed a 61.4 passer rating, per our Tuesday update. Pro Football Rumors relayed Schultz's report that Newsome is cashing in early on that start.
Schultz followed up that the new contract also creates cap space. That matters with the trade deadline a week away and the front office still shopping.
What It Means for the Giants Secondary
Locking Newsome in steadies one half of the corner room while Paulson Adebo works through his practice window after injured reserve.
Dennard Wilson's defense has asked for consistent effort on the back end, as we covered. Keeping a corner who has limited passer rating early removes one roster question as John Harbaugh and Joe Schoen keep turning over stones.
It also pairs with the trade-deadline push. Ian Rapoport expects the Giants to stay aggressive for a running back and an interior defensive lineman. Cap room from a reworked corner deal is one more tool for that shopping list.

What Comes Next for Newsome and New York
Newsome is no longer a one-year rental. The Giants get cost certainty at corner through the next few seasons while Adebo's return timeline plays out.
The next question is how Schoen uses the freed-up space before Nov. 10. Running back and interior defensive line remain the loudest needs, and every dollar matters if Jonathan Taylor or a defensive tackle comes available.
For the secondary, the job stays simple: keep the ball in front of you and give Wilson's unit a chance to finish drives. Newsome's early numbers bought him a raise, and now he has to keep that passer rating down with Adebo coming back.
Our Take: Nice Move on Newsome
Ok, nice. That was my full reaction when the Greg Newsome extension hit, and it still is.
You bring in a corner on a one-year deal, he starts, and you lock him up before the price jumps. That is how you manage a secondary that already had Adebo on IR and other question marks.
I approve an aggressive week, and paying Newsome while creating cap space fits. Coach Harbaugh wants a deal before the deadline, and this clears room to chase a running back or interior defensive lineman.
I like keeping a corner who has already shown he can play for this staff. Extend the guy who earned it. Then go finish the trade you actually need.
Nice is the right word. Finish the rest of the shopping list the same way.
