Saturday's Giants news was dominated by a loss on defense: Tremaine Edmunds is out for the season, and Micah McFadden is expected to take over his starting role and the green dot. Abdul Carter's pass rush numbers and a quarterback-by-quarterback look at the passing game round out the day before Sunday's 1 p.m. ET kickoff at Houston. Here is every story Big Blue Film Room published on Oct. 24, 2026, most important first.
Tremaine Edmunds will miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury, The Athletic's Dan Duggan reported Friday, and ESPN reported the injury is a torn chest muscle. He was hurt on the final Saints offensive play of the 34-27 loss and is expected to go on injured reserve, according to NBC Sports. Edmunds never left the field before that: he played all 380 defensive snaps through six games, with 50 tackles, three tackles for loss and two sacks, per Pro Football Reference.
Micah McFadden is expected to take over Edmunds' starting role, Pro Football Talk reported. The 2022 fifth-round pick started 28 games across 2023 and 2024 and topped 100 tackles both years, but he has played two defensive snaps this season. John Harbaugh has called him a starter all along. Behind him, Jack Kelly and Zaire Barnes have barely played on defense. Edmunds' move to injured reserve could open a roster spot for cornerback Paulson Adebo, per Sports Illustrated.
Losing Edmunds also costs the Giants their defensive play-caller. He wore the green dot, the helmet radio that carries Dennard Wilson's calls, and Wilson did not name a replacement Thursday. "We'll figure it out right now. We have options," Wilson said, per Giants Wire, naming Reese, McFadden, Kelly and Barnes as players who can call the defense.
ESPN reported Friday that McFadden is expected to wear the green dot. Reese is the only one of the four who has played nearly every snap. The No. 5 overall pick has been on the field for 99.2% of the defensive snaps, with 49 tackles, four tackles for loss, a sack and an interception, according to Pro Football Reference. The caveat is workload: calling the defense adds pre-snap duties for a rookie who already plays every down. McFadden, Kelly and Barnes have mostly played special teams, combining for 352 snaps there.
Abdul Carter is beating blockers as often as any edge rusher in the NFL. The Giants' second-year outside linebacker is tied for first in ESPN's pass rush win rate at 36%, with 34 wins on 95 pass rushes through Week 6, level with Miami's Chop Robinson. As a team, the Giants rank fourth at 59%. A rusher earns a win when he beats his block within 2.5 seconds of the snap, based on NFL Next Gen Stats tracking data.
The wins have not turned into sacks yet. Carter has 2.0 sacks and seven quarterback hits, according to Pro Football Reference, while Houston's Will Anderson Jr. ranks 17th among edge rushers at 23% and has 7.5 sacks. The run defense remains the weak spot, ranking 23rd in run stop win rate. Sunday offers an opening for the pass rush, with the Texans 18th in ESPN's pass block win rate.
Big Blue Film Room also published a side-by-side look at the three quarterbacks who have run the Giants' passing game, built on Pro Football Reference totals. Jaxson Dart completed 26 of 34 passes for 250 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions before his Week 2 knee injury. Jameis Winston has 957 yards, seven touchdowns and five interceptions in five games, and his 6.1 yards per attempt is the lowest of the three. JJ McCarthy went 11 of 21 for 243 yards in one quarter against the Saints, or 11.6 yards per attempt.
The samples differ sharply: Winston has thrown 158 passes, Dart 34 and McCarthy 21. Winston has also been sacked 15 times, close to 9% of his dropbacks. Harbaugh named McCarthy the starter at Houston on Oct. 22, and the guide flags three numbers to watch with him under center: yards per attempt, turnovers and the run game.
