Key points

  • Abdul Carter is tied for first among NFL edge rushers in ESPN's pass rush win rate at 36%.

  • The Giants rank fourth as a team at 59%, behind Seattle, Minnesota and Detroit.

  • Carter has won 34 of his 95 pass rushes but has two sacks through six games.

Abdul Carter is beating blockers as often as any edge rusher in the NFL. The Giants' second-year outside linebacker is tied for first in ESPN's pass rush win rate at 36%, and he leads a unit that ranks fourth in the league.

Big Blue Film Room shared the ranking on X: "Abdul Carter is tied for first among edge rushers in that category (36%)." ESPN's numbers run through Week 6.

ESPN credits Carter with 34 wins on 95 pass rushes. Miami's Chop Robinson also sits at 36%, on 20 wins in 55 rushes. PFF likes Carter too, as covered in Giants' Abdul Carter Ranks Third Among NFL Edge Rushers in PFF Grade.

What ESPN's Pass Rush Win Rate Measures

ESPN Analytics builds the stat from NFL Next Gen Stats tracking data. A rusher earns a win when he beats his block within 2.5 seconds of the snap, per ESPN.

This season, ESPN added a "bull rush win" to the formula. It credits a rusher who drives his blocker back into the quarterback's space.

The metric doesn't care whether the play ends in a sack. It measures how fast a rusher wins, even when the quarterback gets the ball out in time.

Why Abdul Carter's Sacks Lag Behind the Wins

Carter has 2.0 sacks and seven quarterback hits this season, according to Pro Football Reference. He has played 87.1% of the Giants' defensive snaps.

The gap shows up across the league. Houston's Will Anderson Jr. ranks 17th among edges at 23%, yet he has 7.5 sacks, per Pro Football Reference.

Carter ranked fifth among edges as a rookie under ESPN's old formula, at 21%. ESPN changed the formula this year, so the two numbers aren't a clean comparison.

The run defense is the weak spot, ranking 23rd in run stop win rate. Dennard Wilson has already called out the effort, as covered in Dennard Wilson Calls Giants Who Don't Hustle 'Traitors to the Defense'.

What Comes Next for Abdul Carter and the Giants

The 3-2-1 Giants visit Houston at 1 p.m. ET Sunday. The Texans rank 18th in ESPN's pass block win rate, and Houston's offense ranks fourth in passing yards per game, per Texans Wire.

The same ESPN data has been kind to the Giants' line, as we covered in Giants' Jermaine Eluemunor Tops NFL Tackles in Pass Block Win Rate.

Our Take: Abdul Carter Has to Finish

In September, I wrote that five sacks in 20 career games "is not good enough" for Carter. The Giants needed more disruption.

Two days later, I pointed out that Carter and Kayvon Thibodeaux had 7.5 sacks combined since the start of last season. Two top-five picks. Not good enough.

The win rate says the disruption is there now. Beating a blocker on 36% of rushes puts Carter with the best edge rushers in football.

My standard hasn't changed, though. Those wins have to turn into sacks, and he has two through six games.

Houston is a fair test. The Texans' line ranks in the middle of the pack in ESPN's blocking data. If Carter keeps winning that fast on Sunday, the sack total should start to follow.
